It’s almost that time of year when Snyder catches its annual glimpse of life on the American frontier.

Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the annual May Day fundraiser is set for May 5 at The Coliseum. This year’s event will include something extra special.

To commemorate the 40th anniversary, attendees will be able to purchase quilt squares and write a message on them in honor of or in memory of someone. The squares will be assembled into a quilt and put on display at the Scurry County Senior Citizens Center.

Other events in the works include a silent auction, sweet tooth booth, craft booth, cake and pie auction, quilt auction and barbecue supper.

The center is currently taking donations of service gift certificates and items for the silent auction.

There will also be a performance by the Deep Creek Cloggers, a slide show and scrapbooks.

The highlight of the evening will be the annual quilt auction and barbecue dinner. The auction is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. The barbecue meal will be served from 4:30-6 p.m.

“All proceeds from the event are used for senior center activities and purchases,” senior center director Tammy Quick said. “Last year’s proceeds purchased a new van used for transportation of seniors. Monday through Friday seniors are transported to doctor appointments, the grocery store, banks, to pay bills, the beauty shop and the senior center.”

The center also conducts daily activities, serves noon meals and delivers meals to over 110 seniors every day.

As the senior center prepares for the fundraiser, it is seeking volunteers. The event will count toward volunteer hours for Western Texas College students seeking hours to meet Opportunity Scholarship requirements.
