Twenty-five Scurry County athletes qualified for the Region 2-1A track and field meet during Monday’s area meet at Hamlin High School.
Ten Ira boys and seven girls qualified for the regional meet while Hermleigh had four boys and four girls qualify. The regional meet is set for April 26-27 at LeGrand Stadium at 1st Community Credit Union Field on the campus of Angelo State University.
Isaac Cabrera qualified in three events for the Bulldogs by winning the 800-, 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Hunter McCowen also qualified in three events — the 200- and 400-meter dashes and the 1600-meter relay with Ben Fonville, Anthony Coy and Nathan Goodwin. Karson Valentine qualified in the long jump, 300-meter hurdles and joined Garrett Hafer, Coy and Addison Fowlkes on the qualifying 400-meter relay.
Fonville also qualified in the 800-meter run and Goodwin advanced in the long jump. Other regional qualifiers for the Bulldogs were Lexton Hernandez (3200-meter run) and Ike Weaver (pole vault).
Hermleigh’s Kobe Roemisch and Colton Messick both qualified for the 800-meter run while teammates Gavin Chavez qualified in the 100-meter dash and Devin Hildebrand qualified in the 200-meter dash.
In the team standings, Ira finished second to Hamlin. The Bulldogs finished with 134 points, six points behind Hamlin (140). Hermleigh finished eighth with 25 points.
Hermleigh’s Makia Gonzales qualified in four girls’ events — 100-meter dash, shot put, discus and 400-meter relay with Ciera Digby, Lynzie Stewart and Sarah Murphy. Digby also qualified in the 400-meter dash and Stewart advanced in the 300-meter hurdles.
Ira’s 400- and 800-meter relay teams of Shyia Hill, Evelyn Gallegos, Madison Peterson and Macie Hanshew qualified for the regional meet as did Haylee Gruben (800-meter run), Katelyn Clifton (high jump) and Breauna Hall (discus).
The Lady Cardinals finished fifth in the team standings with 52 points and Ira was seventh with 42 points. Hamlin won the team title with 128 points.
