Coy homers to power Ira past Baird, 7-2

HAMLIN — The Ira Bulldogs’ 2020 season is off on a 3-0 start after the Bulldogs swept their three games in the Hamlin baseball tournament last weekend.
After wins over Stamford and Haskell on Friday, the Bulldogs took it to the Baird Bears 7-2 on the final day of the Hamlin tournament Saturday.
Seniors Anthony Coy and Karson Valentine powered the Bulldogs’ offensive and Nathan Goodwin made his debut on the mound, striking out three batters and giving up just two runs over four innings.
The Bears got to Goodwin early, scoring the game’s first run on an RBI double to left field. Goodwin struck out the next batter to end the inning, holding the Bears to just one run.
Ira got the run back in the bottom of the first when Goodwin scored on a fielding error.
Ira delivered the first knockout blow in the second inning when Coy hit a three-run bomb over the left field fence to put Ira on top 4-1.
Baird got a run back on a bases loaded walk in the fourth, but Goodwin got out of the inning, limiting the Bears to just the one run.
In the bottom of the fourth, Valentine laced a two-run double into left field, scoring Goodwin and Coy. Sophomore Bryton Partain pitched a scoreless fifth and Ira closed out the 7-2 victory.
Ira improved to 3-0 on the season.
They will have a week off before taking on the Snyder JV team at Moffett Field at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
