LUBBOCK — A nine-strikeout performance from junior pitcher Austin Escobedo lifted the Snyder Tigers to their first win of the 2020 season, a 4-2 win over Krum Friday.
Escobedo went the distance, pitching all seven innings and striking out nine while allowing just two runs, neither earned.
The Tigers struck first in the bottom of the first inning when senior Ryan Rodriguez scored on an RBI single by sophomore Bryce Ford. An RBI groundout from sophomore Jerek Pena, scored junior Leeroy Tavarez, making the score 2-0.
The Tigers got another run in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI groundout by sophomore Derek Dominguez, allowing Rodriguez to score.
Escobedo pitched a perfect top of the fourth and Snyder went back to work, extending its lead to 4-0 on another RBI groundout, this one from sophomore Dylan Rodriguez.
Krum got a pair of runs back in the top of the fifth inning on a two-run triple, but Escobedo allowed just one base runner over the final two innings.
In their second game of the day, the Tigers took on Wichita Falls and despite scoring three runs over the final two innings, came up short in a 5-3 loss.
Wichita Falls touched up Snyder starter Derek Dominguez for four runs in the first two innings. Sophomore Zeke Esparza came in to pitch in relief, allowing just four hits and one run over four innings of work.
Down 5-0 heading into the top of the sixth, the Tigers began to mount a comeback attempt when junior Blaine House’s single allowed Pena to score. House later scored on a wild pitch, cutting the lead down to 5-2 heading into the seventh inning.
Esparza tried to help himself with an RBI single to score Dominguez in the seventh, but a double play and strikeout ended the Tigers’ comeback bid, resulting in the 5-3 loss.
Snyder is 1-3 on the season, and will continue to play at the Lubbock Baseball Tournament today.
