The Hermleigh junior high school girls’ basketball junior high school team defeated Merkel's eight grade A-team 42-38 in overtime to start the season Monday.
The Lady Cardinals were led by Destiney Hopkins, who scored 13 points and went 6-11 from the free throw line. Both Syreah Callaway Raelee Leatherwood finished with eleven points.
The Lady Cardinals needed an overtime period to take down Merkel and several players came through in the final minutes to secure the win. Leatherwood nailed all three of her four free throw attempts in overtime and Callaway added a three pointer to lift the Lady Cardinals to the overtime win. The Lady Cardinals will be on the road to take on Abilene Wylie East on Nov. 8.
