Ira defeats Baird in Game 1 of regional quarterfinal series

HAWLEY — Ira capitalized on 11 errors to defeat Baird 16-1 in Game 1 of a Region 1-1A quarterfinal baseball series Thursday.
Kade Sanders hit a 2-run single to put Ira on the scoreboard in the top of the first inning. Baird scored its only run in the bottom of the inning.
Ira broke the game open with eight runs in the third inning, including five on errors. Anthony Coy’s 3-run double highlighted the inning.
Karson Valentine hit a 2-run double during the six-run fourth inning.
The game ended in the fifth inning on the 10-run rule.
Coy allowed four hits and one run with eight strikeouts in a complete-game win. He also led the offense with two doubles and three RBIs.
Ira (18-2) will play Baird (16-7) in Game 2 at 6 p.m. today at Brownwood. If a third game is necessary, it will be played at 8 p.m. Saturday in Brownwood.
