Lady Cardinals are on fire to start district play, improve to 2-0

Just two games into district play, the Hermleigh Lady Cardinals are clearly on a mission.
After beating Highland by more than 30 points in their District 13-1A opener, the Lady Cardinals blasted Loraine, 70-28 to improve to 2-0 in district play and 16-5 overall.
Five Lady Cardinals finished with double digit points and senior Ryleigh Benitez finished just two steals and two rebounds short of a triple-double. Junior Brittany Smith scored 15 points and senior Makia Gonzales scored 14 points.
The win extended the Lady Cardinals’ winning streak to five games heading into a meeting with Westbrook on Saturday. Westbrook, at 16-6, is also 2-0 in district play, setting the stage for the winner to claim the top district spot. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. Saturday in Cardinal Gym.
The Hermleigh boys also came home with a win Tuesday, defeating Lenorah Grady 49-48 in an overtime thriller. The game was the Cardinals’ final game before district play and the Cardinals will head into Saturday’s game with a 12-10 record.
The Cardinals will also play Westbrook, with tip-off set for 8 p.m.
