Lady Tigers dominant in pair of wins, improve to 5-4

PEASTER — The Snyder Lady Tigers basketball team was dominant in a pair of wins over Fort Worth Paschal and Jacksboro in the first day of the Peaster basketball tournament Thursday.
The Lady Tigers opened against Jacksboro and took control of the game from the tip off. Senior Natalee James scored 14 of her 21 points in the first quarter to propel the Lady Tigers to a 21-point first quarter. Junior Kamiah Davis and sophomore Abby Benitez connected on 3-pointers.
While the offense had a field day, the Lady Tigers were just as impressive defensively, holding Jacksboro to just seven first quarter points.
The Lady Tigers kept rolling in the second quarter, scoring 17 points and holding Jacksboro to 10 to take a 38-17 lead at halftime. James connected on a pair of 3-pointers and Davis scored seven points in the quarter.
In the second half, the Lady Tigers offense cooled down, but still scored 20 points. On the other end of the court, the defense continued to shut down Jacksboro, limiting them to nine points in the third and 10 points in the fourth to close out the 58-36 win.
James led the Lady Tigers with 21 points.
Davis finished with 15 points and three made 3-pointers. Benitez had 10 points.
In its second game, Snyder took on Fort Worth Paschal and Davis helped lead the Lady Tigers to a 62-29 win.
Davis scored six first-quarter points on a pair of 3-pointers and Benitez got on the board with two points, and the two teams were tied at eight following the first quarter.
In the second quarter, Davis connected on another pair of 3s, and made three free throws to lead Snyder to a 19-point quarter.
Benitez, junior Hayley Humphrey and junior Melanie Martinez added 3-pointers to the effort and Snyder took a 29-15 lead going into the half.
Davis exploded offensively in the third quarter. The junior made three 3-pointers on her way to a 15-point third quarter, scoring the majority of the Lady Tigers’ 19 third-quarter points.
James went 2-for-4 from the free throw line and Benitez added two points as Snyder built a 46-27 lead heading into the final quarter.
Davis’s hot shooting continued into the fourth.
After making a pair of jump shots, Davis connected on her eighth 3-pointer of the game. She scored nine points in the fourth quarter to lead the Lady Tigers to the 62-29 win.
Davis finished with 38 points and Benitez scored seven points. As a team, Snyder combined for 12 3-pointers.
The Lady Tigers will continue play in the Peaster tournament with a game against Jim Ned at 6 p.m. today.
