BURKBURNETT — A two-win Friday in the Lady Bulldog Christmas Classic at Burkburnett High School has the Snyder Lady Tigers (13-10) flying high heading into the tournament’s final day.
Snyder defeated Pilot Point and Burkburnett in convincing fashion Friday and remains undefeated in the tournament. The Lady Tigers have won seven of their last eight games.
To open play, the Lady Tigers took on the Pilot Point Lady Bearcats (2-12).
In the first quarter, the Lady Tigers used a string of 3-pointers to build an early lead. Junior Kamiah Davis connected on a pair of 3-pointers and senior Natalee James scored five points, including a 3-pointer, to power the 15-point quarter. Lady Bearcat sophomore Lindsey True scored all 11 of her team’s first quarter points, leaving them trailing 15-11 at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, James scored seven points, sophomore Abby Benitez added four points and senior Zalyn Jaramillo and junior Hayley Humphrey each added two points. The Lady Tigers put together their second straight 15-point quarter, while the Lady Bearcats scored 11 points in the period.
Senior Brooke Lane hit a pair of 3s and senior Hope McNeese added another 3-pointer, but they trailed 30-22 at the half.
In the third quarter, the Lady Bearcats outscored the Lady Tigers 14-10, cutting into the lead heading into the fourth quarter. Snyder’s defense shut the Lady Bearcats down in the fourth quarter, allowing just four points, to close out the 52-40 win.
Snyder then played tournament host Burkburnett (1-11). The Lady Tigers never allowed Burkburnett to get into the game in a 47-25 win.
In the first quarter, Davis got the Lady Tigers off to a hot start with a nine-point performance. James and Humphrey each scored their first two points and Snyder took the early 13-8 lead.
After scoring eight in the first quarter, the Lady Bulldogs were limited to just five points in the second. Snyder’s defense did not allow Burkburnett to find its groove offensively. Junior Melanie Martinez scored three points, Benitez hit her first 3 and Davis went 2-of-2 from the free throw line as the Lady Tigers took a 23-13 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, five different Lady Tigers scored in a 15-point quarter. James and Martinez scored four points each, Jaramillo added three and Humphrey and Benitez each scored two. Burkburnett got 3-pointers from senior Lexi King and junior Mallory Williams, leaving them behind 38-21 heading into the fourth quarter.
As they did against Pilot Point, the Lady Tigers shut the door on the Lady Bulldogs in the fourth quarter, limiting them to just four points. In an attempt to slow down the Lady Tigers on offense, Burkburnett began fouling. The Lady Tigers responded by going 7-of-10 from the line to seal the 47-25 win.
To wrap up tournament play, the Lady Tigers took on Krum at 12:40 p.m. today. The full game story for that game will be in the Monday edition of the Snyder Daily News.
