BIG SPRING — Defense was the key for the Snyder Lady Tigers Tuesday. They held the Big Spring Lady Steers to 24 points and notched a 42-24 victory.
Big Spring (6-17, 2-3) jumped out to an early lead thanks to a 12-point first quarter, but managed only 12 more the rest of the game as the Lady Tiger (17-13, 4-1) defense stiffened.
Big Spring nailed a pair of 3-pointers to build the early lead.
Sophomore Abby Benitez made a 3 for the Lady Tigers, but outside of four points from junior Melanie Martinez and another two from junior Hayley Humphrey, the Lady Tiger offense was quiet early. Snyder trailed 12-9 after a quarter.
The offense got things rolling in the second quarter. Seniors Natalee James and Mayce Herrington each scored four points and Martinez added another two. Big Spring struggled to get any offense, scoring just three points on a 3 from junior Jacqueline Belew. The Lady Tigers scored 14 points and took a 23-15 lead at the half.
Snyder continued to play stifling defense in the third quarter, allowing just two points. The Lady Tigers rode a seven-point performance from James to a nine point quarter and took a 32-17 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Big Spring senior Madison Kuykendall and freshman Daniah Wrighter combined for seven fourth quarter points, but Snyder would not relinquish its lead.
Five different Lady Tigers scored in the fourth quarter and helped close out the 42-24 win.
The win was the second in a row for the Lady Tigers and kept Snyder in second place in the District 5-4A standings with just three games left on the regular season schedule. Snyder will be off this Friday before traveling to face Sweetwater at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
