Lady Westerners fall to Midland College

The Western Texas College women’s basketball team came up short against Midland College Monday, despite double digit scoring efforts from three different players.
The Lady Westerners (6-8, 0-3 in WJCAC play) connected on eight 3-pointers, but Midland College sophomores Kayla Anderson and Ella Tofaeono proved to be too much for the Lady Westerners defense. The duo combined for 37 points in the win.
Neither team mustered much offense in the first quarter. Freshman Shuntorri Rodgers and sophomore Morgan Dial scored the first four points for WTC and the teams were tied 5-5 at the end of the quarter.
In the second quarter, the Lady Westerners connected on five 3-pointers. Rodgers made two and her nine points helped the Lady Westerners to a 22-point quarter. Freshman Carrie Lacy scored her first five points and sophomore Marta Casas Gimenez added five points helping the Lady Westerners to a 27-19 halftime lead.
The Lady Chaparrals answered in the second half, out-scoring WTC in the third quarter. Lacy scored seven points and Dial connected on another 3-pointer, but the Lady Chaparrals cut into the WTC lead by five points, leaving WTC with a 41-38 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Midland College dominated the fourth quarter.
 Tofaeono scored 11 points in the post and WTC could not find an answer to stop her down low. The Lady Chaparrals outscored WTC 24-16 in the final quarter to come from behind for the 62-57 win.
WTC is still looking for its first conference win. The next chance will arrive Thursday WTC hits travels to Frank Philips College at 5:45 p.m.
