HERMLEIGH — Thirty-two local athletes and six relay teams qualified for the regional meet during Monday’s Class 1A area track and field meet.

Ira’s Isaac Cabrera won the boys’ 1600- and 3200-meter runs. Hermleigh’s Kiki Gonzales won the girls’ shot put and discus. Gonzales also qualified in the 100-meter dash, along with teammate Brishaya Sneed. Three Hermleigh boys qualified for the regional — Colton Messick (3200-meter run), Preston Carr (high jump) and Payton Rivera (100-meter dash).

Two Borden County athletes won multiple events — Braxton Barnes (boys’ shot and discus) and Hailey Lowery (girls’ 1600- and 3200-meter runs).

“We don’t have many on the team, but the ones who compete take it seriously and work hard,” Hermleigh head coach Duane Hopper said. “I feel good about our performances.”

Injuries forced Ira head boys’ coach Todd Wall to adjust his entries.

“We still had good performances despite the injuries,” Wall said. “The 400-meter relay qualified and Aiden (Fowlkes) replaced his brother (injured Asher Fowlkes) and qualified in the 100-meter dash. Two hurdlers qualified and Isaac won two of his three races. Hunter (McCowen) qualified in the 400-meter dash and long jump. He had his best jump of the year in the long jump.”

Three other Ira athletes also qualified — Karson Valentine (300-meter hurdles), Garrett Hafer (200-meter dash) and Matthew Brazil (300-meter hurdles). Ira also qualified in the 400-meter relay.

Three Ira girls advanced to the regional — Sabrina Highfield (3200-meter run), Breauna Hall (discus) and Katelyn Clifton (high jump).

“I told them to be mentally tough, especially in dealing with the wind, and have a good attitude and they would do well,” Ira girls’ head coach Marcy Reneau said. “We had good performances. Haylee Gruben has been improving in the 400-meter dash and qualified. She has been pushing herself.”

Borden County won the boys’ team championship. Klondike and Borden County tied for the girls’ team title.
