Youth sports leagues in Scurry County are working on ways to get their 2020 seasons started after COVID-19 forced the county to shut down public gatherings.
Snyder Little League’s goal is to begin the season as early as late May.
Little League president Johnny Pena said he has his eyes on June 1 as a possible start date.
“We’re just waiting on the county,” he said. “I haven’t told my coaches they can start practicing or anything, but we are ready to go. We are waiting on the May 18 announcement and we will go from there.”
While the regular season could still happen, post-season tournaments were cancelled after Little League made the decision to cancel the 2020 Little League World Series earlier in May.
Like Snyder Little League, Shining Stars remains suspended and president Stephen Read said the league will re-evaluate following the May 18 decision.
Snyder Fast-pitch softball made the decision to cancel its 2020 season at a Tuesday meeting. League officials said they discussed CDC guidelines and came to the conclusion that canceling the season was safest for everyone involved.
Officials also said the league is developing a plan to issue refunds and will announce that plan once it’s finalized.
