The 15th class of former athletes was inducted into the Snyder High School Athletic Hall of Honor at the First Baptist Family Life Center on Friday.
The class included football players Dick Hayes and Reginald Scarborough, the 1985 state champion volleyball team and world-record holder Gail Read.
Hayes, a 1960 Snyder graduate, was a three-year letterman in baseball and was named second team all-state in football his senior year. He was just happy his name was remembered after so many years.
“It’s amazing,” he said. “As long as it’s been, I’d have thought they had forgotten about me.”
Hayes and Scarborough, a 1961 Snyder graduate, were teammates both at Snyder and at Texas Tech.
Scarborough played on the offensive line for the Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders during his football career. He said he was honored to be included with the names already in the hall, as he grew up watching many of them.
“It is outstanding to be recognized like this, especially with some of the people already in the hall of honor that I grew up admiring and watching them play,” he said. “Snyder has a lot to be proud of and I am very thankful for this honor.”
The members of the 1985 volleyball team looked like schoolgirls again as they all enjoyed each other’s presence and reminisced on the championship season. During her speech, Karlene Thompson said the members of the team grew to be like sisters.
“I consider these ladies my sisters,” she said. “We didn’t have AAU basketball or volleyball. We had each other and we were always together. Snyder gave us the opportunity to grow up into young woman.”
Members of the team were Stacy Dunk, Pam Casias, Tommy Williamson, Leslie Ward, Sharnette Thompson, Kima McLarty, Donna Clay, Allison Adams, Shondra Robinson, Donna Anderson, Hope Hernandez and Karlene Thompson. The managers were Stephanie Blair, Joan Godair, Janice Godair and Stacie Raschke and the team was coached by Vicki Nelms and Patty Grimmett.
Read was undefeated in the 180-yard low hurdles during his senior season at Snyder and he kept his speech like he kept his races, short and fast.
“Anyone that knows me knows I am a man of few words,” Read said. “I am honored.”
Read was the unofficial world record holder in the 180-yard low hurdles with a time of 18.2 seconds and is still the state record holder.
Proceeds from the luncheon will be used to award six scholarships to Snyder High School seniors in the spring.
