Snyder’s guard-post combination proved too much for San Angelo Lake View to overcome at Tiger Gym Saturday.
Guard Dralon Jackson scored a game-high 37 points and post Dillon Scott had 16 points to lead the Tigers past the Chiefs 67-54 in a non-district basketball game.
“I told the players that we need a good combination of guard and post play,” Snyder head coach Lee Scott said. “Our post players (Dillon Scott, Chris Dickinson and Abram Smith) had good games. The guards did a good job of getting the ball to the posts.”
The Tigers (15-3) will conclude non-district play at Breckenridge Tuesday and at Tulia on Jan. 12. Snyder will open the District 2-4A schedule against Lubbock Estacado at home Jan. 15
“We played better than we did in the two games Wednesday,” Scott said. “The practices helped to get rid of the rust from the Christmas break. We played great defense and executed on offense to get the win.”
Snyder defeated Lake View 58-53 in overtime last month in San Angelo. Scott said that game helped the Tigers prepare for Saturday’s game.
“We played them once this season and had an idea of what they would do on offense and defense,” Scott said. “Our defense stepped up after the first minute of the game.”
Dillon Scott’s field goal gave the Tigers a 3-2 lead early in the first quarter.
Scott scored on the next trip down the court. Jackson’s jumper and a three-point play increased the lead to 10-2. Gerald Butler’s 3-pointer cut Snyder’s lead to 10-5 going into the second quarter.
The Tigers gained their first double-digit advantage, 18-7, on an 8-2 run early in the second quarter.
Lake View responded with a 9-4 run to reduce Snyder’s lead to 22-18. Lake View remained close and trailed 30-25 at halftime.
Snyder held a seven-point lead midway through the third quarter. Timothy Aguero’s 3-pointer pulled the Chiefs to within 38-34.
The Tigers finished the quarter on a 15-4 run, including eight points in the final 45 seconds. Scott scored one field goal and Jackson made two 3-pointers for the 53-38 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Snyder controlled the fourth quarter and led by as many as 17 points
“When we play like we did against Lake View and get everyone involved, we are a hard team to stop,” Scott said. “We got a lot of fast break points by getting in the passing lane and getting steals with players running down the court. We’ve worked on pushing the tempo in practice.”
The freshman team will start the action at 5 p.m. Tuesday at Breckenridge. The JV game is scheduled to start at 6:15 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
“Our goal is to win these final two non-district games and we are 1-0 right now,” Scott said. “We want to win the next two games going into district play.”
