The Snyder Tigers continue to move in the right direction.
The passing of Logan Green and steady play on defense helped Snyder (2-0) defeat Brownwood 31-21 in a non-district football game. The win snapped a five-game losing streak to Brownwood (0-2). The last time Snyder defeated the Lions was 28-14 in 2012.
“We executed all phases of the game,” Snyder head coach Cory Mandrell said. “You must do that to beat a team like Brownwood. We knew Brownwood was big on the defensive front and we could not just pound the ball at them. We had to throw it.”
Greene completed 21-of-26 passes for 205 yards and three touchdowns. Jake Chavez led the receiving corps with 10 receptions for 108 yards while five other players caught at least one pass.
Mandrell credited the offensive line for Friday’s success.
“The offensive line played outstanding and Logan was never sacked,” he said. “Logan did a good job spreading the ball around, so Brownwood could not focus on stopping just one receiver. J.J. (Burns) had a big run in the fourth quarter and kept a drive going. That was a big run and sealed the game. Those are the type of plays championship teams make.”
Greene said the offense executed the game plan.
“We knew how they would play on defense and we were prepared,” he said. “We had confidence in the game plan. All of the pass routes were working and we executed the plays.”
Brownwood switched to a T-formation midway through the third quarter and scored two touchdowns. Snyder was able to answer Brownwood’s two second-half touchdowns.
“Our defense played well and didn’t disappoint anyone,” Mandrell said. “They bent a little, but didn’t break. Brownwood was moving the ball out of the T, but they used a lot of time off the clock. We scored after each of the touchdowns and maintained control of the game.”
Snyder defensive coordinator Armando Martinez said preventing big plays was the key.
“The main thing was they used the clock by going to that formation,” Martinez said. “I‘d rather not give up big plays and force them to use the clock. They didn’t break any big plays, but I would have loved to keep them out of the end zone. We made them work for the those touchdowns in the second half.”
Snyder took a 3-0 lead on a 13-play, 78-drive on the game’s first series. Greene completed 4-of-5 passes to move the ball to the Brownwood 25-yard line. Chavez’ 24-yard reception moved the ball to the 6-yard line.
Snyder rushed for four yards on the next three plays, setting up fourth-and-goal at the 2-yard line. After a false start penalty, Snyder decided to settle for Jorge Olivares’ 24-yard field goal for the 3-0 lead with 7:45 left in the quarter.
A Brownwood special teams’ mistake set up Snyder’s first touchdown. Tommy Bowden retrieved a high snap and got off the punt that tallied minus-four yards to give  Snyder the ball at the Brownwood 44-yard line. Greene hit Jayden Samaniego from 25 yards out, with 4:06 left in the quarter and with Olivares’ extra point kick, Snyder led 10-0.
Brownwood scored midway through the second quarter on Bowden’s 60-yard pass to Zach Strong. Zach Smith added the extra point to cut the deficit to 10-7.
Snyder responded with a 75-yard drive on seven plays in less than two minutes. Chavez’ 36-yard reception put Snyder in position at the Brownwood 21-yard line.
Later in the drive, a double reverse ended with the ball in Nathan Kendrick’s hands for a 18-yard gain. Two plays later, Greene completed a 3-yard touchdown pass to Chaves to give Snyder a 17-7 halftime lead.
A Brownwood fumble on a punt return set up Snyder’s next score Snyder needed only one play — a 21-yard touchdown pass from Greene to Julian Flores — to increase its lead to 24-7 early in the second half.
Brownwood stayed close as Hayden Tunnell capped a 30-yard drive on a 1-yard dive with 4:56 left in the third quarter. Brownwood had an opportunity to cut Snyder’s lead midway through the fourth quarter. A.J. McCarty made a diving catch for an apparent touchdown, but the score was nullified by an illegal receiver downfield penalty. Smith later missed a 31-yard field goal attempt.
After the missed field goal, Snyder drove 80 yards on six plays to add to its lead. Burns scored on a 2-yard run with 3:29 left in the game.
Brownwood scored with 1:08 to go, but Snyder recovered the onside kick and ran out the clock..
Snyder will host San Angelo Lake View for homecoming and Snyder Athletic Hall of Honor night Friday.
“Brownwood is a historical program, but we knew what was needed to win,” Mandrell said. “This win will give us momentum going into next week’s game against Lake View.”
