GRAHAM — Turnovers and special-team mistakes were too much for Snyder to overcome against No. 2 Argyle Thursday.
Argyle (10-0) returned an interception and punt for touchdowns in the first quarter en route to a 49-14 win over Snyder (1-8) in a Class 4A Division I bi-district football playoff game.
“We needed to play a near-perfect game,” Snyder head coach Cory Mandrell said. “Argyle is a good team and they are No. 2 in the state for a reason. We didn’t play a clean game with allowing returns for touchdowns and had three turnovers in the first half. That’s too much to overcome against a team like Argyle.”
Quarterback Jarrett Reneau provided most of the offense for Snyder. He carried the ball 24 times for 107 yards and completed 7-of-19 passes for 130 yards and one touchdown. Abram Smith caught four passes for 76 yards.
Mandrell said Snyder’s fourth-quarter scoring drive was a good way to end the season.
“It was nice to score a touchdown near the end of the game and end it on a positive note,” Mandrell said. “Argyle is a good defense, but we have a good defense, too. The scoreboard didn’t show how hard the defense played against a good offense.”
Argyle took the lead when Dylan Sadler returned a Reneau interception 40 yards for a touchdown with 7:26 left in the first quarter.
Snyder needed only one play late to tie the game at 7-7 on Reneau’s 65-yard touchdown run.
Argyle was able to score two touchdowns before the end of the first quarter. Chase Estrada caught an 18-pass from Dane Ledford and Gage Campbell returned a punt 47 yards to give Argyle the 21-7 lead.
In the second quarter, Argyle increased its led to 35-7. The Eagles drove 76 yards on five plays, capped by Don Williams’ 19-yard touchdown run. Cale Nanny caught a 36-yard touchdown pass from Ledford.
In the third quarter, Williams scored on a 12-yard run to cap a six-play, 82-yard drive.
Argyle drove 85 yards on 10 plays for its final touchdown. Hayden Clearman completed three passes during the drive, include a 42-yard completion to Estrado. Later in the drive, Williams scored on a 7-yard run to increase the lead to 42-7.
Late in the fourth quarter, Snyder took advantage of a fumble on a punt return at the Argyle 41. Reneau completed a 41-yard touchdown pass to Chris Depaz.
“I talked with the players after the game that this was not a good feeling,” Mandrell said. “That is why we will keep working hard in the weight room, show up for practices and keep pushing. We don’t want to feel this way and end our season in early November again.”
Mandrell said the final record was disappointing, but the program’s future is bright.
“We have a lot of good young players coming back,” Mandrell said. “They gained experience in this game. We start the new season on Monday. You are never proud when winning just one game, but you have to start somewhere. We will use this for motivation to push us over the top in the future.”
