The Snyder High School Athletic Hall of Honor will introduce the 2019 induction class Sept. 20 at the First Baptist Church Family Life Center.
The inductees are Dick Hayes, Reginald Scarborough, Gail Read and the 1985 state champion volleyball team.
The 1985 volleyball team finished the season with a 31-4 record, including a 13-1 district record. The team defeated Lubbock Dunbar, Fort Worth Castleberry and Levelland to reach the state tournament. Snyder beat Leander in the Class 4A state championship match.
The team was coached by Vickie Nelms and Patty Grimmett. Members of the team were Allison Adams, Donna Anderson, Pam Casias, Donna Clay, Stacy Dunk, Hope Hernandez, Kima McLarty, Shondra Robinson, Karleen Thompson, Sharnette Thompson, Leslie Ward and Tammy Williamson. The team managers were Stephanie Blair, Janice Godair, Joan Godair and Stacie Rasckie.
Hayes, a 1960 Snyder graduate, was a three-year letterman in baseball and finished his sophomore year with a 10-0 record as a pitcher. In football, Hayes was a first-team all-district running back his sophomore and junior seasons before moving to quarterback his senior year.
During his senior season, Hayes ran for 856 yards and threw for another 663 yards. He earned first-team all-district and all-area honors while also being named second-team all-state. Hayes also received the Carl Herod Outstanding Player Award. In college, Hayes began his career at Texas Tech before later playing at Tarleton State University.
Scarborough, a 1961 graduate, was a three-year letterman in football and received the Carl Herod Outstanding Player Award in 1961. As a junior, he was a first-team all-district and second-team all-area selection. As a senior he was named to the first-team all-district and all-area teams.
Scarborough was a letterman at Texas Tech University and in 1964, he was named to the all-Southwest Conference honorable mention team.
Read, a 1963 Snyder graduate, competed on the 440-yard relay and mile relay teams, but it was the hurdles where he excelled.
Read finished his senior year undefeated in the 180-yard low hurdles, taking first place at the state meet with a time of 18.4 seconds. The time was also honored by Sports Illustrated as being the nation’s best. Read was the unofficial world record holder in the 180-yard low hurdles with a time of 18.2 seconds and is still the state record holder. He received an athletic scholarship to Southern Methodist University, where he finished with the fourth fastest time in the nation in the 330-yard hurdles.
Tickets may be purchased at the Snyder ISD athletic fieldhouse on Denison Ave., the Snyder Chamber of Commerce office or AimBank. All proceeds from ticket sales will be used to award six scholarships to a Snyder High School senior in the spring. A minimum of $500 is given to each recipient.
