The Snyder Major League all-star team used good pitching and timely hitting to defeat Abilene Southern 14-0 at Logan Field Sunday when beginning bracket play of the District 5 Little League Tournament.
Aythen Tarin, Dominic Dominguez and Jeren Pena combined on the five-inning shutout. The Snyder pitching staff has not allowed a run during the tournament while the defense didn’t commit an error for the third straight game.
Tarin allowed two hits with a strikeout in three innings. Dominguez gave up one hit in the fourth. Pena finished by allowing one hit in the fifth.
Anthony Luna led the offense with four singles and two RBIs. Dominguez had three singles with three RBIs. Mateo Hernandez contributed two singles with three RBIs.
Snyder will play Albany at the Wylie Little League Complex in the winner’s bracket semifinals at 6 p.m. Tuesday.
“We were able to keep our pitchers under 35 pitches, so they can pitch Tuesday,” Snyder manager Johnny Pena said. “We had two 6-pitch innings. You couldn’t ask for anything else. We played good defense and had two double plays. You can’t go wrong when the defense helps the pitchers get out of innings.”
Snyder scored five runs in the top of the first inning. Dominguez and Mateo Hernandez hit 2-run singles and one run came on a Southern error.
“That’s why I like to be the visiting team,” Pena said when asked about getting the early lead. “I know this team can score runs. Our pitchers are more relaxed when they see runs on the board.”
Snyder didn’t score again until the fifth inning when it ended the game on the 10-run rule. Easton Stewart hit a 2-run double and Anthony Luna had two RBI singles. Tarin, Hernandez and Dominguez hit RBI singles.
Pena plans no changes for Tuesday’s game.
“We will go with the same pitching combos from our previous three games,” he said. “We have had good pitching. But I will not be afraid to keep one of the pitchers in the game longer.”
