BROWNWOOD — Not much went right for Snyder in a 70-3 loss to Brownwood at Gordon Wood Stadium Friday.
Head football coach Wes Wood said he and his team knew the non-district game was going to be a challenge.
“I told our guys we were out-matched, so we knew we needed to come out and start swinging,” Wood said. “I told the kids I am so proud of them.”
Brownwood scored 42 points in the first quarter alone. Reece Rodgers ran for two touchdowns and Drew Huff threw for one touchdown to A.J. McCarty and ran for another.
The Lions also got scores on a 75-yard punt return by Dane Johnson and a interception return by Zach Strong.
In the second quarter, the Lions returned two interceptions for touchdowns, one by Rowdee Gregory and another by Damion Jones.
Rodgers scored his third touchdown of the night and Huff connected with McCarty for another touchdown pass as the Lions led 63-0 at the half.
Wood talked to his team at halftime and challenged them to respond despite the score difference.
“I challenged them at halftime and said that ‘You have to have something to be proud of,’” he said. “The light in the brightness does not define you, it is the dark in the hard times.”
The Tiger defense came out in the second half and held Brownwood scoreless in the third quarter. Sophomore Jorge Martinez began to find some running room, rushing for 35 yards on four carries in the second half.
The Lions managed to score to start the fourth quarter when Blaize Espinosa found Isyah Campos for a 17-yard touchdown pass.
The Tigers responded by ending the shutout on a 36-yard field from Jorge Olivarez.
Wood said despite the loss, his team’s effort in the late minutes of the game allowed them to leave on a bright spot.
“I challenged the offense to get us points in any way, shape, form or fashion and we were able to get a field goal,” he said. “For us to leave on somewhat of a bright note is something we can begin to rebuild on.”
The Tigers (0-2) will return to action Thursday at San Angelo Lake View. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
