Snyder head baseball coach Shane Stewart saw his team grow up Friday night.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the third inning and facing a bases loaded situation with only one out, Snyder pitcher Derek Dominguez walked in one run. But the next three batters could not take advantage of the situation and the Tigers trailed 2-1 going into the bottom half of the inning.
In the bottom of the third, the Tigers loaded the bases with no outs and scored five runs to break open a 12-2 win over Idalou at the Best of the West Tournament.
The Tigers will take on Andrews at 7 p.m. today in the tournament finale.
“That changed the balance of the game,” Stewart said of the third inning effort by Dominguez and the defense. “We limited them to one run and we come back and face the same situation and put up a five spot.”
Stewart said Dominguez was shaken up after Kree Dycus hit a solo home run in the second inning, but bounced back after the third inning situation.
Dominguez retired nine of the final 11 batters he faced. He allowed two runs on two hits over five innings while striking out eight and walking three.
Snyder took a 1-0 lead in the first inning on Ryan Rodriguez’ RBI double that scored Jake Chavez.
After Dycus’ home run in the top of the second tied the game, the Wildcats loaded the bases in the third inning when Dominguez hit two batters and walked the next two to force in a run.
He calmed down and forced two groundouts and had a strikeout to end the inning.
Snyder sent nine batters to the plate in the third inning and scored five runs on two hits, three walks and one hit batter. Dominguez’ bases loaded walk tied the game at 2-2 and Leeroy Tavarez grounded out allowing Chavez to score, giving Snyder a 3-2 lead.
Bryce Ford followed with a 2-run double to center field and he later scored on a wild pitch to give Snyder a 6-2 lead.
Chavez scored on a wild pitch in the fourth inning and the Tigers plated five runs in the fifth to end the game with the 10-run rule.
In the fourth inning, the bottom half of the lineup reached base thanks to a walk and two hit batters. Cameron Smith’s walk forced courtesy runner Sammy Sosa home and Hernandez and Kyler Davidson followed with back-to-back RBI singles.
With the bases still loaded, Hernandez scored on a wild pitch to cap the scoring.
Snyder finished with five hits in the game, led by Rodriguez’ two hits with two RBIs.
