Snyder established the tempo on its first drive, but four turnovers was too much in a 55-2 loss to Levelland at Tiger Stadium Friday.
Snyder failed to score a touchdown in a game for the first time since the 2014 season opener against Littlefield at Tiger Stadium.
Snyder opened the game by driving from its own 25 to the Levelland 28, but and was held on downs. In the third quarter, the Tigers also started at their own 25 and had a first-and-goal at the 9 before losing possession on downs.
“We did exactly what we wanted to do at the start of the game,” Snyder head coach Cory Mandrell said. “We just didn’t put the ball in the end zone. I don’t know even if we had scored, the outcome would have changed. It could have been a different game and the players might have played with a different mentality for the remainder of the game.”
Levelland scored three touchdowns in the first half, including one following a Snyder turnover. Despite the final score, Mandrell said Snyder’s defense showed improvement and held the Lobos to season lows of 453 yards and 55 points.
“The defense played well during the first half, but two mental mistakes led to touchdowns,” Mandrell said. “They were playing well enough for us to win, but the offense didn’t help them out.”
Levelland scored its first touchdown on a six-play, 70-yard drive. Qualin Miller capped the drive with a 12-yard touchdown run with 1:38 left in the first quarter.
The Lobos converted a fumble recovery into a touchdown to increase the lead. Nick Gerber hit Zack Estrada on a 34-yard touchdown pass with 10:55 left in the first half. Snyder blocked the extra point kick, which Chris Depaz picked up and returned it for two points.
Levelland’s third touchdown came on a seven-play, 51-yard drive. Gerber hit Daniel Hurn on a 3-yard touchdown pass to give the Lobos a 21-2 halftime lead.
Levelland scored on its three possessions of the third quarter. Gerber completed touchdown passes of 15-yards and 42-yards to Jeffrey Elliott and 32-yards to Kegan Dent.
In the fourth quarter, Chris Gerber caught a 6-yard pass from Nick Gerber and Hurn scored on a 31-yard run.
“Everything snowballed on us in the second half,” Mandrell said. “Once we got behind, we had to speed it up and got out of our rhythm. It was nice to get out on the field after the last two weeks. ”
Snyder (0-3) will host Perryton on Friday in the annual homecoming game.
