Snyder’s hopes of pulling off an upset never materialized at Tiger Stadium Friday.
No. 8 Wylie scored touchdowns on its first four possessions and defeated the Tigers 56-13 and clinched a share of the District 3-4A Division I championship.
The Tigers (1-5, 1-1) are tied for second place with Brownwood (3-3. 1-1) and Stephenville (2-6, 1-1), which defeated Big Spring 52-27.
“We needed to play solid football and didn’t do that,” Snyder head coach Cory Mandrell said.” “We had too many mental mistakes. I thought our starting line matched up OK against Wylie’s line. Wylie’s depth didn’t hurt us.”
Snyder was not able to establish a running game and finished with for 35 yards on 26 carries. However, Snyder did throw for 230 yards, led by Jarrett Reneau, who completed 13-of-24 passes for 212 yards and two touchdowns, both to Abram Smith. Logan Greene completed 2-of-6 passes for 18 yards. Smith had four receptions for 145 yards.
“We had some bright spots,” Mandrell said. “We were not able to get the ball consistently to Abram. We forced it to him a few times. We did come out of the game healthy.”
Wylie head coach Hugh Sandifer said his team played smart.
“We played smart when Snyder had two first downs on its first possession,” he said. “Our defense got stops, put points on the board and put more pressure on Snyder. We set a goal of separating ourselves from the other district teams and have one more game (Stephenville at home on Nov. 4) to go.”
Sandifer said he understands what Mandrell is facing in his first year and said better days are coming for the program.
“Snyder coaches are doing a good job and you see on film they have their players playing hard,” Sandifer said. “It’s going to take a while for them to get things going.”
Wylie scored two touchdowns in the first quarter. The Bulldogs drove 78 yards on five plays with Brooks Pepper catching a 16-yard touchdown pass from Zach Smith. Wylie needed six plays to cover 76 yards for its second score — a 1-yard run by Zach Smith.
In the second quarter, Cason Grant scored on a 7-yard run and returned a punt 61 yards to increase the lead to 28-0.
Snyder got on the board when Abram Smith caught a 64-yard touchdown pass from Reneau with 8:05 left in the first half.
Wylie was able to take a 42-6 halftime lead with two additional scores — a Pepper 1-yard run and a Zach Smith 25-yard touchdown pass to Grant.
Wylie increased its lead early in the third quarter on a Brady
Horn 62-yard touchdown run.
Snyder scored midway through the quarter on a five-play, 71-yard drive. Reneau capped the drive with a 30-yard touchdown pass to Abram Smith. Reneau added the extra point. Cole Burke scored on a 2-yard run for Wylie with with 9:46 left in the game. Snyder will play at Stephenville Friday.
“We didn’t perform well against Wylie,” Mandrell said. “We need to come back Monday and start preparing for Stephenville.”
