It took a season-high scoring performance from an unlikely source for the Snyder Tigers to take down the Brownfield Cubs, 42-38 Tuesday.
With the Cubs limiting the Tigers from the perimeter, the Tigers turned to junior forward Zach Miller, who turned in an eight-point third quarter, and a 16-point game, to lead the Tigers to their second straight win.
Brownfield jumped out to an early 9-6 lead in the first quarter, thanks to a pair of 3s and converting a made basket and foul call to build the early lead.
Snyder senior Teafale Lenard scored six of his nine points in the first quarter, to lead the Tigers, but Brownfield led the Tigers 14-11 going into the second quarter.
Snyder dialed up the defense in the second quarter, limiting the Cubs to eight points.
Junior Michael Jaramillo hit a corner 3-pointer and sophomore Eber Murillo scored three points in the quarter as the Tigers trimmed the Cubs’ lead to 22-21 at the half.
As the Tiger defense continued to stifle the Brownfield attack, holding the Cubs to just seven third quarter points, Miller took over offensively. After a 3-pinter from senior Jayden Samaniego, Miller scored six straight points and eight of the Tigers’ 11 points in the quarter.
Snyder took a 32-29 lead heading into the final quarter.
Miller added four more points in the fourth quarter and Lenard got back on the board, scoring three points, and the Tigers held on to their lead to win their second straight game, 42-38.
Snyder head coach Lee Scott said it was the first time he had beaten Brownfield in his seven years at Snyder.
Despite not playing its best game, Scott said his team showed resiliency in the win.
“It just shows that we are not gonna quit and we were tough enough to fight through some adversity and overcome it,” he said. “That’ll show up whenever we need it later on, whether it be district or a playoff game, we know we can overcome it and come out on top.”
The Tigers will enjoy the Thanksgiving break before hosting San Angelo Central at noon Saturday.
