HEREFORD — Three Tigers reached double digit points in the Snyder boys’ basketball team’s 54-34 win over Caprock Tuesday in their first game in the Hereford basketball tournament.
The win was Snyder’s fourth straight, improving the team’s record to 4-1.
The Longhorns and the Tigers went back and forth throughout the first quarter and early in the second. Snyder senior Sammy Sosa and junior Michael Jaramillo connected on 3-pointers in the first quarter to power the Tigers’ early attack. Senior Jayden Samaniego and junior Zach Miller each scored two points in the quarter, but Snyder trailed 11-10 heading into the second quarter.
The Longhorns went on a 6-0 run to start the second quarter and led the Tigers 17-10 with just over a minute left in the half. The Tigers offense answered with a 7-0 run of its own to close out the quarter. Samaniego scored five points and sophomore Eber Murillo got on the board with his first two points. Snyder and Caprock were tied at 17-17 just before the half.
After rallying in the second quarter, the Tigers continued to ride that momentum into the third quarter, scoring 20 points and taking a 37-25 lead heading into the final quarter. Samaniego made two more 3-pointers. Miller scored five points and senior Corey Landin added four points in the quarter.
After giving up 11 points in the first quarter, the Tigers held Caprock to fewer than 10 points in every other quarter on the way to a 54-34 win.
Sosa scored seven fourth-quarter points to pace the Snyder attack. Landin connected on a pair of 3s to bring his total points for the game to 10, his first double digit scoring performance of the season.
Samaniego scored a team leading 16 points. Sosa and Landin both scored 10 points and Miller finished with nine.
The Tigers’ last loss was Nov. 19. They will face Dalhart at 1:30 p.m. and Canyon at 7:30 p.m. today.
