Strong pitching and timely hitting helped Snyder defeat Brownfield 14-4 at the Best of the West Tournament on Thursday.

Jake Chavez allowed six hits and four runs over five innings. He finished with four strikeouts and four walks.

Jarrett Reneau gave up one hit and had one strikeout in one inning of work.

Matt Bass hit three singles with an RBI and one stolen base while Aaron Escobedo had two singles with three RBIs and three stolen bases. Brody Jasso and Reneau each hit two singles with an RBI and Chavez added two singles.

“Jake didn’t have his best stuff, but he kept competing,” Snyder head coach Shane Stewart said. “He did a good job of working through the second inning. He got a lot of run support from his teammates on offense. We had a lot of quality at-bats and Lance (Davis) hit two shots right at them. The players are learning to play for each other and not worry about individual statistics. We hit the ball well.”

Snyder scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning with Bass and Jasso hitting RBI singles. Escobedo added a sacrifice fly in the inning.

Brownfield scored one run in the second inning.

Snyder increased the lead to 6-1 in the third on RBI hits by Escobedo and Colton Lee.

However, Brownfield cut to the lead to 6-4 in the top of the fourth.

In the fifth, Snyder increased the lead to 10-4 on Reneau’s RBI single while three runs scored on errors.

The Tigers ended the game on the 10-run run rule by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

“We took advantages of our opportunities and kept competing throughout the game,” Stewart said. “We got hits up and down the lineup.”

Snyder (5-5) was scheduled to play Shallowater at 4:30 p.m. and Seminole at 7 p.m. today. The Tigers will conclude the tournament against Idalou at 7 p.m. Saturday.

“Seminole and Shallowater  will be tough games,” Stewart said. “Seminole is an improved team from the one we played in a scrimmage. Shallowater always has a quality team.”
