Twenty-four Scurry County football players were named to the 2018 District 4-1A Division I all-district team.
Ira running back Anthony Coy was named the district’s offensive player of the year while teammate Carter Roberson, an offensive-defensive lineman, was named the newcomer of the year. Ira head coach Toby Goodwin was named the coach of the year.
Coy rushed for 1,688 yards with 38 touchdowns this season and caught four passes for 66 yards and two touchdowns. Roberson was the center on offense and recorded 10 tackles, 14 assistedt tackles and five tackles for loss from his nose guard position.
Four Ira players were named to the first team offense — tight end Karson Valentine (258 yards rushing, three touchdowns, 11 receptions for 328 yards, eight touchdowns), quarterback Nathan Goodwin (28-of-48—591, 12 touchdowns), fullback Matthew Brazil (397 yards rushing, 13 touchdowns, 15 receptions for 348 yards) and Roberson.
Hermleigh receiver Kelton Carroll (25 receptions for 331 yards, six touchdowns), spread center Blake Hancock (15 receptions for 217 yards, four touchdowns) and spread back Payton Rivera (1,048 yards rushing, 20 touchdowns, 84-of-114—1,356, 19 touchdowns) were first-team selections on offense.
Four Ira players were named to the first team defense — lineman Ben Fonville (14 tackles, 13 assisted tackles, 9½ tackles for loss), Brazil (29 tackles, 22 assisted tackles, 2½ tackles for loss, one interception) at linebacker, Coy (23 tackles, 25 assisted tackles, four tackles for loss) at safety and Valentine (40 tackles, 10 assisted tackles, six tackles for loss, two interceptions) as a utility player, Hermleigh lineman Tucker Barton (36 tackles, 14 assisted tackles, two quarterback sacks) and Rivera (41 tackles, eight assisted tackles, seven fumble recoveries), who played cornerback, also were first-team selections.
Three Hermleigh players were named to the second team offense — receiver Tucker Barton (18 receptions for 335 yards, seven touchdowns), utility back Luis Gonzalez (104 yards rushing, one touchdowns, 21 receptions for 332 yards, three touchdowns) and special teams player Tracker Dugan (one reception for 43 yards, one touchdown). Ira’s Cody McCowen (one rush for eight yards) was also named to the second team offense.
Ira cornerback Garrett Hafer (21 tackles, 15 assisted tackles, three sacks, two interceptions) and lineman Asher Fowlkes (two tackles, three assisted tackles) were selected to the second team defense along with Hermleigh linemen Zach Harty (13 tackles, 10 assisted tackles) and Hancock (23 tackles, 14 assisted tackles), Gonzalez (20 tackles, eight assisted tackles) at linebacker and Carroll (17 tackles, one assisted tackle, two interceptions) at safety.
Four Hermleigh players were named to the honorable mention offense — Austin Escobedo (receiver), Cody Smith (receiver), Preston Carr (quarterback) and Reed Owens (lineman). Ira’s Brayden White was an honorable mention selection as a special teams players.
Hermleigh lineman Colton Messick and linebackers Brandon Harty and Tyler Thompson were named to the honorable mention on defense.
