In wake of Governor Greg Abbott’s closure of all schools for the remainder of the school year, the University Interscholastic League (UIL) followed suit by canceling all events, activities and state championships for the spring.
“Our staff had been working hard on plans to resume activities this spring, but without schools in session, interscholastic activities cannot continue,” UIL Executive Director Dr. Charles Breithaupt said. “Our highest priority during this challenging time is ensuring the health and safety of our students and communities and making progress in the containment of COVID-19 in Texas. We are now turning our attention to the 2020-2021 school year.”
Practices, workouts and rehearsals all remain suspended as well until further notice.
The move to cancel all events ends any chances local athletes and coaches were holding onto of salvaging this season.
Snyder head football coach and athletic director Wes Wood released a statement following the announcement.
“Dear competitors, I’m sorry,” he wrote. “I would just direct this to the seniors who will forever remember this unfortunate situation to end their careers, but it’s more than that. The difference is that the seniors will not get a second chance. For that, I am sorry and I appreciate all you have poured into your journey. You will not regret that.”
As of now, the earliest athletics could return is the beginning of the 2020-21 school year.
