For the third time this spring, the University Interscholastic League extended its suspension of high school athletic events and other competitions.
The suspension that initially was set to expire on March 29, and was then extended to May 4, has been changed to an indefinite suspension.
In the press release, the UIL said it is still keeping May 4 as a possible return date, but it is monitoring all available information as that date draws near.
UIL deputy executive director Jamey Harrison said that the UIL is developing plans that would allow state championships to be played.
“We will communicate very quickly with schools what those plans include,” he said in a video conference Sunday. “At the moment, all UIL activities are suspended.”
One of the biggest hurdles the UIL would have to clear if schools are allowed to re-open on May 4 is allowing athletic teams an acclimatization period to get back up to speed before play resumes.
“We don’t know what those students have been doing in terms of physical activity,” Harrison said. “We know that we are going to provide an acclimatization period of some sort. Until we have more information about when schools may or may not be in session, it’s difficult for us to make any sort of final plans.”
Until then, coaches will have to settle for working with their teams remotely.
