Westerners finish 15th at NJCAA golf tournament

The Western Texas College men’s golf team finished 15th at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) golf tournament at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla.
The Westerners shot a four-round 1,187 and finished three shots behind McLennan Community College. Central Alabama Community College won the team title with an 1,116. 
Midland Community College finished third at 1,130 followed by New Mexico Junior College at 1,134.
Nico Kyprian had the best four-day score for the Westerners, shooting 296 to finish in a tie for 46th place. Jake Leatherwood finished tied for 52nd with a 297 and Michael Weppering was tied for 63rd with a 299. Jay Hitt (302) and Brannon McCabe (326) finished 72nd and 115th, respectively.
Track
Seven athletes and two relay teams qualified for today’s finals during preliminary races on Friday at the NJCAA track meet in Hobbs, N.M. 
Emmanuel Yeboah qualified in the men’s 100-meter dash with the fastest preliminary time of 10.06 seconds. Andre Edwards (10.48 seconds) and Gabriel Waler (10.62 seconds) did not qualify for the finals after finishing 16th and 22nd, respectively, in the preliminaries.
Ned Azemia will run in the 400-meter hurdles finals after running a 52.57 in the preliminaries. His time ranked fifth among the eight finalists. Darrell Edwards finished with a time of 55.78 seconds, which ranked 18th.
Rayon Buttler finished the 800-meter run with a time of 1:53 to reach today’s final. He will enter the race with the fourth best time. Two other Westerners competed, but did not qualify for the finals — Evan Reyes (17th, 1:59.21) and Reginald Mouton (19th, 1:59.24).
The men’s 1600-meter relay team of Khamal Stewart-Baynes, Azemia, Reginald Mouton and Buttler moved into the finals after finishing fourth in the preliminaries with a time of 3:11.
WTC did not have anyone qualify in the 200-meter dash as Andel Miller was 14th (20.60 seconds) and Gabriel Walker was 23rd (21.86 seconds). 
In the 1500-meter run preliminaries, Jesus Mata was 25th (4:33) and Elijah McWilliams was 28th (4:43).
On the women’s side, Brittney Johnson had the third fastest time in the 100-meter dash at 11.48 seconds to advance to the finals. Shikyla Walcott finished with a time of 12.74 seconds, which ranked 26th in the preliminaries.
Mariya Hudson qualified for the 200-meter dash finals after recording the best time in the preliminaries at 22.74 seconds. Johnson also qualified in the event, finishing fifth in the preliminaries with a time of 23.25 seconds.
The 1600-meter relay team of Satanya Wright, Johnson, Keiara-Ashley Cunningham and Hudson had the fastest preliminary time (3:46) on Friday and will run in today’s finals.
