With all high school athletics suspended until May 4 at the earliest, Snyder High School athletics is at a standstill.
Snyder athletic director Wes Wood said that all Snyder ISD sports would have been cancelled through April 6 with the school district’s cancellation, but the UIL’s decision to delay all activities through May outlasts that.
“We miss our kids and we know that they are hurting from this,” Wood said regarding the suspension.
“It sucks, but the fact is, it’s necessary. As much as our world revolves around athletics, the reality is that this situation is taking precedence over the whole world. It really makes you step back and be thankful for what we do have.”
Wood and his staff have put together a home workout schedule for their players to follow because he said the results of this delay may be felt all the way into football season.
“We will get through it, no doubt,” he said. “Tough times don’t last, but tough folks do. The impact this will have next fall will be very interesting. I predict that you are going to be able to tell very easily who was able to self-motivate and stay accountable with their home workouts.”
The earliest UIL events can begin once again is May 4 and Wood said he is optimistic about that deadline.
“We will keep chugging with online education and social distancing,” he said.
“We are holding on to the hope that we will be able to resume our spring sports in some capacity come May. We have to keep the faith.”
The Snyder News will continue to post updates on the situation as they become available.
