The Western Texas College basketball teams will soon be sending athletes all over the country to continue their playing careers.
WTC sophomore Darius Mickens of the men’s team and sophomore Jasmine Tinnell of the women’s team both announced their decisions over the weekend. Mickens will be headed to Cal State Bernardino University to continue his career. In 33 games in 2019-2020, Mickens averaged 13.4 points per game with six rebounds and 3 assists. The six-foot-three guard is from from Willis.
Tinnell, a native of Lubbock, is headed to Park University in Gilbert, Ariz., to play for the Park University Buccaneers.
The six-foot-five post player averaged 2.3 points per game and 5.3 rebounds for the Lady Westerners in 2019.
Perhaps the most sought after Westerner, sophomore Tafari Simms, continues to receive Division I offers.
Simms announced he had received offers from University of New Orleans, Northern Illinois University and the University of Incarnate Word, all in the past week.
While Simms has not made a commitment, he is likely headed to the next level after averaging 11.8 points per game with 6.8 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 2019.
In other news in WTC athletics, one of the most established golfers in Wisconsin is headed to Snyder. Russell Dettmering of Merrill, Wis. committed to WTC this week after a conversation with the WTC coaching staff.
Dettmering shot a six-under 66 to win the Wisconsin Division I state title in 2019.
