ABILENE — South Plain College’s offense was too much for the Western Texas College Westerners to overcome in a season-ending 76-52 loss in the WJCAC Region V Tournament semi-finals at Abilene Christian University’s Moody Coliseum Friday.
South Plains scored 44 points in the first half and WTC struggled to keep pace.
In the first half, WTC got 3-pointers from freshman C.J. Smith and sophomore Darius Mickens, but struggled to match South Plains’ firepower. They outscored WTC 44-21 in the first half.
Mickens led the way for the Westerners with nine first-half points. Smith scored five points but no other Westerner scored more than two.
WTC’s offense started finding its groove in the second half. The Westerners connected for four 3-pointers and scored 31-second half points.
South Plains scored 32 second-half points and took the 76-52 victory.
The loss brings the Westerners’ season to a close. WTC went 23-12 with an 8-9 WJCAC record.
“So incredibly proud of this team and all they accomplished,” head coach Kyle Cooper wrote on Twitter.
South Plains will face Clarendon College in the WJCAC championship game at 2 p.m. Saturday.
