WTC women third heading into final round of NJCAA golf tournament

The Western Texas College women’s golf team maintained its third place position at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) tournament on Wednesday.
WTC shot 320 at the LPJA International Hills Course in Daytona Beach, Fla. and led fourth place Murray State Community College (657) by 18 shots. WTC had a two-round 639 heading into today’s final round.
Seminole State (Fla.) leads the 19-team field at 597, followed by Daytona State College at 613. 
Kiana Oshiro entered the final round in third place with a two-round 149 after shooting 75 on Wednesday. She trailed Seminole State’s Woraoitcha Anndit (142) and Sophia Warren (145).
WTC’s Josephine Bertelsen is in 17th place at 161 followed by Inma Ortiz Prieto at 162, who is in 18th place. Riley Grunewald (167) and Hijke Pretorius (190) were 26th and 50th, respectively.
Men’s Golf
The men’s  golf team dropped to 16th place after the second round of the NJCAA tournament. 
The Westerners shot 309 during the second round at Duran Golf Club in Melbourne, Fla. 
Indian Hill Community College took the team lead after the second day with a 551. First round leader New Mexico Junior College fell to second place with a 555.
Michael Wepperning, who shot a 69 during the first round, fell from sixth to 52nd place on Wednesday with a 79. He has a two-round score of 148. Jake Leatherwood (149) moved from 69th to 56th place after shooting 74 on Tuesday. Nico Kyprian entered the second round in 65th place at 150 while  Jay Hitt is in 95th place at 156. Brannon McCabe is in 116th place at 167.
Track
The track team picked up several awards during Wednesday’s coaches meeting at the NJCAA national meet.
Mariya Hudson was named the women’s regional track athlete of the year while Rayon Butler earned the men’s track athlete of the year award. Both athletes will compete at this weekend’s national meet at New Mexico Junior College.
Trinity Williams was named the region’s assistant coach of the year for both the men and women.
Baseball
Two WTC players were named to the Western Junior College Athletic Conference all-conference team.
Outfielder Abel Pena was named to the first team while infielder Carson Burns was an honorable mention selection.
Pena led the Westerners with a .416 batting average with 22 doubles, two triples and seven home runs. He finished with 31 RBIs and stole 14 bases. Burns hit .353 this season with 12 doubles, two triples and one home run to go along with 41 RBIs.
