Scurry County residents should be on the lookout for inclement weather today, but weather should be improving by Thursday morning.
“Actually today, the Snyder area is at enhanced risk of severe weather, so definitely a chance for today and tonight,” said Michelle Schuldt, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Midland. “Basically, large hail is possible, damaging winds, heavy rain, localized flash flooding and a couple of tornadoes can’t be ruled out.”
A combination of weather patterns is responsible for the impending storms, Schuldt said.
“We have these upper-level troughs, or upper-level lows that come across the area and they help produce lift in the atmosphere, and then we have low-level moisture that also combines with that lift and that helps produce the rain and the showers that you’ve had,” she said. “So we’ve just had a lot of that going on, and we had a cold front as well, which helped create that thunderstorm. We have a slight chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Saturday night, but it really doesn’t look to be too good of a chance,” Schuldt said.
The upcoming severe weather comes after Scurry County received 1.76 inches of rain in the early morning hours of Sunday this past weekend, including 1.12 inches in the 40-minute period  between 5:15 and 5:55 a.m., according to totals recorded for the area at localconditions.com. Peak wind gusts more than 35 miles per hour were recorded at 8:40 p.m. Sunday.
Schuldt said Scurry County has seen four inches of rain in March, while the area has received 5.82 inches in 2020.
