Nearly 100 Scurry County youth will exhibit 302 animals during next week’s Scurry County Junior Livestock Association (SCJLA) show at The Coliseum annex.

A total of 152 pigs have been entered for this year’s show along with 62 goats, 48 lambs and 40 steer.

Activities are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Wednesday with the pig weigh-in. On Thursday, steers will be weighed-in at 11 a.m. and the pig showmanship contest will begin at 3 p.m. The pig show will follow and will be judged by Todd Beyers of Abernathy.

Goats and lambs will be weighed-in at 8 a.m. and the lamb show, judged by Josh Blanik of San Angelo, will begin at 1 p.m. The goat show, judged by Jordan Clem of Tahoka, will follow. At 5 p.m., Dr. Steve Kennedy of Muleshoe will judge the steer show.

The association will honor nine seniors this year — Kami Smith, Matthew Gonzalez and Justin Wilson, all of Hermleigh, Abby Yelvington of Snyder, Kade Sanders, Reaghan Ruiz and Harrison Chappell, all of Ira, and Morgan Digby and Steven Beck who represent Scurry County 4-H.

The seniors will be vying for five scholarships — the Wanda Eicke Memorial Scholarship, Big Country Electric Scholarship, SCJLA/Western Texas College Facility Scholarship, Rose Sanchez Memorial Scholarship and the First Bank and Trust Scholarship.

The donor appreciation meal will begin at noon Saturday in the Westerner Room and awards will be presented at 1:30 p.m. During the ceremony, the grand and reserve grand champions will be presented with award buckles.

Grand champion buckles were donated by the Harrell family in honor of Sonny Harrell (steer), William and Julie Cotton and Justin and JoBeth Donelson (lamb), R&M Lawn and Landscaping (goat) and the John Stewart family in memory of Todd Shaw (pig). Reserve grand champion buckles were donated by the Harrell family in honor of Sonny Harrell (steer), Jeff Minor and Gilbert Sanchez (lamb), Doug and Kathy Scott (goat), Joe LaRoux Rental Properties in memory of Ronnie and Sheryl Lamb (pig).

Also during the awards ceremony the junior and senior showmanship awards will be presented. Senior showmanship buckles were donated by Scurry County Farm Bureau (steer), Joe LaRoux Rental Properties in memory of Ronnie and Sheryl Lamb (lamb), Jay and Tosha Calloway (goat) and Wilson Motors (pig). The junior showmanship buckles were donated by Lone Star Ag Credit-Sweetwater (steer), the Joe Campbell family (lamb), the Tyson Price family (goat) and Inwest Retirement Solutions (pig).

The showmanship awards will be awarded to the exhibitors who demonstrate outstanding showmanship in and out of the show ring.

The all-around exhibitor will also be named during the awards ceremony. The award is given to the exhibitor who demonstrates outstanding showmanship and sportsmanship in at least two species categories. This award is determined on a point-system based on an individual’s results in the highest six placing classes, breed and reserve breed champion, grand and reserve grand champion and showmanship.

The award is sponsored by PM Feed & Grain in appreciation to the recipient’s contribution and efforts in making the 2018 show successful.
