Emmanuel Church was given 90 days to demolish a building that was declared a nuisance by Snyder’s Building Standards Commission Monday night.
City Inspector Dan Hicks said the structure, located in the 1900 block of 21st Street, “should have been torn down” three years ago.
According to Hicks, a group from Arkansas had said it would come in and rebuild the structure, but the congregation never heard from them.
“I have tried to work with them. I watched it get worse and worse,” Hicks said.
According to an inspection report, the building has inadequate sanitation, structural hazards, hazardous wiring, hazardous plumbing, faulty weather protection, hazardous or no mechanical equipment and has inadequate fire protection equipment. According to Hicks’ report, the structure is also unsecured, has hazardous or unsanitary premises and is an attractive nuisance and a fire hazard.
Hicks said the church’s pastor asked for at least 90 days to demolish the building. When a building is declared a nuisance, the city allows 30 days to demolish it.
Commission chairman Steve Rich said the church should be given 30 days to get it done. Commission member Vernon Clay said 90 days should be granted as a “good faith gesture.”
If the building is not demolished after 90 days, the city will demolish the building at the cost of the property owner.
