After part of its north wall collapsed Friday morning, the rest of the Snyder Appliances building was demolished later in the day.
Snyder City Inspector Dan Hicks said the roofs of the two buildings which covered the appliance store in the 2400 block of College Ave. were both caving in, leading to water damage. Once the wall began to collapse, Albert Hernandez, one of the co-owners of the store, began filling out paperwork to sign the building over to the city, Hicks said.
Both buildings were scheduled to go before the Snyder Buildings Standards Commission on Oct. 5, but Hicks said that will no longer be the case.
“When the wall came down, you could see the deterioration,” Hicks said. “There was water damage, termite damage and weather damage.”
Hicks said there are no plans by the city for the lots, but other property owners could learn from the situation.
“Vacant and abandoned buildings deteriorate more quickly,” Hicks said. “Owners need to maintain old and vacant buildings. Otherwise, this happens.”
