A strong cold front is expected to bring cold temperatures and a wintry mix of precipitation to Scurry County beginning Thursday.
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has already begun treating major roadways in the area in anticipation of the storm system, which is expected to pass through Scurry County Thursday afternoon.
“A strong upper trough moving off the West Coast will create the potential for precipitation across southeast New Mexico and West Texas Thursday night through Saturday,” the National Weather Service (NWS) stated in a special weather statement issued this morning. “At the same time, a cold front will move into the region Thursday. Some locations in the northern Permian Basin may see freezing temperatures both Thursday night and Friday night.”
A mix of rain and freezing rain is possible for Thursday, while a mix of rain and snow is possible for Friday, the bulletin stated. No snow accumulations are forecast, although the weather service said that is subject to change.
Scurry County has a 50 percent chance of rain showers Thursday night, with a 70 percent chance of freezing rain forecast Friday, increasing to a 70 percent chance of showers and possible snow Friday night. Friday temperatures are expected to range from a high of 37 to a low of 29.
Saturday’s forecast calls for a 60 percent chance of a rain-snow mix, decreasing to 40 percent by the evening hours. A high temperature of 39 is forecast, with low temperatures expected to be around 25.
