Scurry County EMS will offer a Stop the Bleed training class for the community.
Paramedic Russel Thomas will lead the May 18 class in the Scurry County EMS training room located in the armory at Towle Park. The class will begin at 9 a.m. and is free to the public.
With the increasing number of worldwide mass casualty events, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security launched the nationwide Stop the Bleed campaign in 2015.
The class trains civilians how to best handle bleeding emergencies before first responders arrive on the scene, Thomas said.
“As first responders, it’ll take us five minutes to get there,” Thomas said. “With this training, you can feel confident to stop the bleeding before we arrive. You can be the first person to act in an emergency situation.”
Thomas and Scurry County EMS Director Jason Tyler have led Stop the Bleed trainings for most taxing entities.
A recent $2,000 grant from Big Country Electric Cooperative will be used to help purchase Stop the Bleed kits, Tyler said.
Scurry County EMS offers free Stop the Bleed training for groups or organizations.
