County jobless rate hits lowest level in four years

Scurry County unemployment rate hits its lowest monthly level since December 2014, according to figures released by the Texas Workforce Commission.
April’s 2.6 unemployment rate was the lowest since 2.4 percent was reported during the final month of 2014. The final three months of 2014 had unemployment rates under 3 percent — 2.9 in October and 2.8 percent in November.
In April 2019, the county had 6,906 people in the workforce with 180 classified as unemployed. In contrast, 9,646 people were in the workforce in December 2014 with 236 being unemployed.
The commission reported in March 2019 that the county had 6,944 people in the workforce with 222 being unemployed (3.2 percent unemployment rate).
Andrews and Kent counties each had unemployment rates under 2 percent in April. Andrews reported a rate of 1.7 percent while Kent had a 1.9 percent rate. Dawson and Mitchell counties had the highest rate in the region at 3.3 percent.
Other county unemployment rates were Borden, 2.4 percent; Fisher, 2.4 percent; Howard, 2.5 percent; Nolan, 2.5 percent; and Coke, 2.7 percent.
Growth in the Texas economy continued in April, with 28,900 seasonally adjusted non-farm jobs added over the month. Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate fell to 3.7 percent, returning to an all-time record low last held in December of 2018. 
April marked the 108th consecutive month of annual growth for total non-farm employment.
“Our state’s ongoing success is linked to the innovation and competitiveness of employers in a range of industries providing Texans more opportunities to demonstrate their world-class skills,” said commission Chair and Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs.
The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) recorded April’s lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs with a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 1.7 percent, followed by the Odessa MSA which recorded a 2 percent rate. The Amarillo MSA had the third lowest rate at 2.1 percent.
