Scurry County Appraisal District officials said Friday that people will have plenty of time to file a protest to their property and mineral valuations.
Several property owners were concerned because they had not received their valuation notice and thought Tuesday was the deadline to file a protest with the district.
While the vast majority of valuation notices will be mailed out next week, Chief Appraiser Larry Crooks said property owners will have sufficient time to file a protest if need be.
“The deadline to file a protest is May 15 — or 30 days after the notices are mailed out, whichever is later,” Crooks said. “That means that most of the property and mineral owners will have until June 15 to file a protest.”
And some property owners may have even more time, he added, noting that some commercial property valuation notices may not be mailed by Tuesday.
Valuation protests will be heard during July, with the appraisal district submitting its certified valuation rolls by July 25, Crooks said.
More detailed information on protest procedures may be found on Page 3B of today’s edition.
In a related development, Crooks said a third party company is attempting to convince some property owners to secure their services to file for a homestead exemption for a fee, a process owners can do for free locally.
Homestead Designation Services of Austin has mailed notices to many property owners in the area, offering to handle homestead exemption filing for the owners for $45.
Crooks said the company’s offer is legitimate but unnecessary.
“The thing is, homeowners don’t have to go through a third party and pay $45,” Crooks said. “They can come into the office here and do it for free.”
Crooks said property owners with questions on the company’s offer can call the appraisal district at 573-8549 for more information.
