Deputies involved in multi-county pursuit

Four Scurry County Sheriff’s Office deputies were involved in a multi-county pursuit that began near the Nolan-Scurry-Mitchell county line Saturday night.

An Abilene-based Department of Public Safety (DPS) trooper attempted to stop a pickup drive by Harvey Leon Baxter, 26, of Wolfforth, for a traffic violation on U.S. Hwy. 84. According to reports, Baxter did not stop and a high-speed pursuit began.

Scurry County dispatchers received a call from the trooper at 7:43 p.m. concerning the pursuit. County deputies joined the pursuit until it reached the Garza County line. 

The pursuit continued through Garza County and into Lubbock County.

Lubbock County law enforcement shut down U.S. Hwy. 84 near Slaton. Baxter stopped near Slaton and a standoff began. The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT and K-9 teams approached the vehicle at around 11:30 p.m. and arrested Baxter.

He was charged with evading arrest in a vehicle, felon in possession of a firearm, unauthorized use of a vehicle, resisting arrest, driving at an unsafe speed and no driver’s license. 

Local law enforcement have not determined if any charges will be filed in Scurry County.

Baxter is currently being held in the Lubbock County Detention Center.
