Five Scurry County students qualify for state UIL academic competition

Five Scurry County students advanced to the University Interscholastic League (UIL) state academic meet.

Snyder High School junior Rena Morrell placed first in spelling and vocabulary at Saturday’s regional meet at Texas Tech University. This will be her third time competing in the state UIL academic competition.

From Hermleigh ISD, Haygen Halkowitz placed third in prose interpretation at Saturday’s regional meet at Angelo State University. 

From Ira ISD, three students qualified for the state competition after competing in Saturday’s regional meet at Angelo State University. They are Asher Fowlkes, second place individual in accounting, JoMarie Sanchez, third place in ready writing and Tori Rosas, first place individual in spelling and vocabulary. 

The accounting team and the spelling and vocabulary team also placed second in their events and were named alternates to state. Accounting team members are Fowlkes, Carter Roberson, Breauna Hall and Reese Camp. Spelling and vocabulary team members were Rosas, Sanchez, Valerie Juarez and Lesley Haley. 

Snyder students who competed Saturday but did not place were Matthew Sharp, computer applications; Randy Hernandez, news writing; Caitlyn Crane, headline writing; and Ethan Gowin, poetry interpretation.

Other Hermleigh students who placed in Saturday’s meet but did not advance were Brianna Rawls, fifth in persuasive speaking and fifth in prose interpretation, and Stormi Cobb, sixth in poetry interpretation. Rachel Wilson competed in literary criticism but did not place.

Other Ira students who placed in Saturday’s meet but did not advance were Kylie Miller, sixth place in editorial writing, and Camp, fourth place in social studies and alternate to state. 

Ira students who competed but did not place were Bryanna Brush, Lincoln-Douglas debate; Brilyn Loving, prose interpretation; Lasey Johnson, feature writing and literary criticism; Sabrina Highfield, literary criticism; and Ben Fonville, headline writing.

The UIL state academic meet will be held May 4-5 at the University of Texas at Austin.
