Many organizations have been hosting food drives for the Scurry County Food Cupboard, which provides food on a supplemental basis for people in need in Scurry County.
Director Sonny Greenfield said the food cupboard is doing well.
“We are in pretty good shape,” Greenfield said. “We are a little bit lower (on food), but that is usual for this time of year.”
Greenfield said that the number of families needing assistance is still rising.
“On Tuesday, we had 122 families,” he said. “I think that’s the largest (number of families) we’ve ever had.”
He said that 80 or 90 families receive food in a typical week.
“We’ve had more young families who have lost their jobs or have downsized in jobs so the need is growing a little bit,” Greenfield said.
Greenfield said the food collected by the Scurry County Ministerial Alliance during its Thanksgiving service resulted in a lot of peanut butter and jelly for the cupboard. He added that the food cupboard is always in need of flour and hand soap.
Greenfield said the Snyder Kiwanis Club is hosting its annual Goodfellows food drive through area schools through Tuesday. The Scurry County Library’s Food for Fines program ends Monday.
Greenfield said anyone wishing to donate food may also take it to the food cupboard on Tuesday mornings.
Monetary donations may also be mailed to 3202 42nd St., Snyder, TX 79549 or P.O. Box 416, Snyder, TX 79550.
Greenfield said the churches rotate monthly volunteer workers, but that anyone is welcome to help at anytime.
