While no warnings have been issued, the National Weather Service is forecasting freezing temperatures for Scurry County on Sunday.
A cold front will move through the region Sunday afternoon with winds gusting from the north as high as 30 miles per hour. Temperatures on Sunday afternoon will be in the mid 50s, but will drop to below freezing during the evening hours.
The high on Monday will also be in the mid 50s with evening lows dropping to the lower 30s.
From Tuesday through Thursday, temperatures will be in the mid to lower 60s during the day and upper 30s at night.
Forecasters are asking people to take care of their pets, pipes and plants when freezing temperatures are in the forecast.
Pets that normally stay outdoors overnight should be inside during freezing weather, forecasters said.
Water inside unprotected pipes freeze over when it’s cold outside. Since water expands when it freezes, it can cause pipes to crack or split. When the frozen water thaws, the water leak may cause serious damage to the home. Covering exposed pipes may protect them from freezing.
It is also recommended to turn inside faucets on overnight to help keep water circulating through the pipes.
Before the temperature drops below 38 degrees, water plants thoroughly to keep the moisture around the plants a little warmer. You can cover plants before nightfall to trap the heat. Remember that potted plants are more susceptible to the frost and freezing, so wrap the pots in towels or burlap.
