Looking for a place to sit and enjoy the view from Snyder’s college on the hill?
Western Texas College (WTC) is buying new benches for the campus.
The old wooden ones were recently scrapped because of wasp nests and wood rot.
There is now no external seating on campus, so in honor of WTC’s 50th anniversary, the school plans to purchase new, higher quality benches.
Alex Phillips, Director of College Advancement at WTC, said that the benches would be a much-needed improvement on the campus.
They will sell for $800 and have a dedication plaque on top to commemorate loved ones, a business, a family, or whatever the buyer wants. They come in blue or green, the school’s colors, and Phillips noted that they would “add some color to campus.”
The proceeds from bench sales will go to the Westerner Fund, which is dedicated to future campus improvements and student-centered activities.
Phillips said the school hopes to sell 20 benches, one of which was purchased last night by the Gold Coats and the Chamber of Commerce at a meeting Monday night.
Members of the Gold Coats presented Phillips with an $800 check at the meeting to purchase a bench dedicated to each organization.
Later in the meeting, the Gold Coats discussed a change in command and volunteers for upcoming events.
There are currently 26 Gold Coat members, but only about 10 are active. Gold Coat members aid and promote the community.
They meet monthly and actively participate in ribbon cuttings for new and existing businesses and as greeters at all chamber functions and other community events.
Last night members elected Carmen Timora president and Janet Spence as president-elect. They discussed and voted to donate money for a bench at Western Texas College.
The bench will be dedicated to the Gold Coats and Snyder Chamber of Commerce. The group also discussed donating money to the West Texas Rehabilitation Center for the Cowboy Christmas Ball and who would volunteer at the ball, as well as upcoming ribbon cuttings.
