Grand jury indicts nine people

The Scurry County District Clerk’s office released the names of nine people indicted by a Scurry County grand jury this week.
Clint Thomas Purifoy, 35, of Odessa, was indicted for the Jan. 7 offense of bail jumping/failure to appear, a third-degree felony. Purifoy failed to attend a court hearing on an original charge of evading arrest. His bond was set at $100,000.
The grand jury learned that Purifoy had been convicted for burglary of a habitation in Ector County in 2002 and for felony burglary of a habitation in Tom Green County in 2004.
Brantley Ray Stephens, 18, and Abrium Jace Huddleston, 18, both of Snyder, were indicted for arson and burglary of a habitation. Both offenses are second-degree felonies and occurred on Aug. 7.
On the arson charges, Stephens and Huddleston were indicted for setting fire to a vehicle which was on another person’s property. Bond for each was set at $10,000.
On the burglary charge, Stephens and Huddleston were said to have entered a residence without the consent of the owner and attempted to steal a television. The bond for those charges were set at $10,000 each.
Gerry Wayne Varner, 39, of Levelland, was indicted for possession of a controlled substance, a second-degree felony, on Oct. 6, 2014. His bond was set at $15,000.
The grand jury learned that Varner was convicted of possession of a controlled substance in Parker County in 2007.
Michael Wayne Gaither, 31, of Snyder, was indicted for unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon, a third-degree felony. The indictment stated that on Dec. 30, Gaither, who had been convicted of felony burglary of a building in 2011, intentionally possessed a firearm before the fifth anniversary of his release from confinement. The bond for that charge was set at $10,000.
The jurors learned that Gaither had been convicted of burglary of a habitation in Scurry County in 2006 and had been convicted of engaging in organized criminal activity in Scurry County in July of 2011.
Zachary Alexander Hopkins, 29, of Snyder, was indicted for the Nov. 25 offense of evading arrest, a third-degree felony. The indictment stated that Hopkins intentionally fled from Scurry County Sheriff’s Deputy Randy Romero, who Hopkins knew was a peace officer, as Romero attempted to arrest or detain him. Bond was set at $5,000.
Paul A. Thompson, III, 48, of Snyder, was indicted for the Oct. 15 offense of driving while intoxicated with two or more prior convictions, a third-degree felony. The indictment stated Thompson was operating a motor vehicle in a public place while intoxicated through the use of alcohol, drugs, a controlled substance or a combination of two or more of those substances and had an alcohol concentration level of at least 0.08. Bond was set at $5,000.
Thompson had previously been convicted of driving while intoxicated in 1992 in Scurry County and in 2013 in Andrews County.
Angela Smith, 38, of Snyder, was indicted for the July 29 offense of forgery, a third-degree felony. According to the indictment, Smith attempted to pass a check with a forged signature. The bond was set at $5,000.
Joshua Roman Gustin, 33, of Hawley, was indicted for theft, a state-jail felony offense. The indictment stated Gustin attempted to steal boots worth more than $100, but less than $750 from another individual on Nov. 24. Bond was set at $5,000.
The grand jury learned Gustin had twice been convicted of theft, in 2009 in Wichita County and in 2011 in Young County.
