Hermleigh ISD trustees voted to re-name Cardinal Stadium as Clarence Spieker Stadium Tuesday. Spieker is a former coach and staff member at Hermleigh ISD and is a member of the Six-Man Football Hall of Fame.
Hermleigh’s Cardinal Stadium is getting a new name: Clarence Spieker Stadium.
The Hermleigh ISD school board voted unanimously for the name change at its meeting Tuesday evening.
“At the May meeting we discussed renaming the football field to honor Clarence Spieker, who was a long-time coach, principal and community member of ours — a counselor, he is in the Six-Man Football Hall of Fame — and so everyone kind of thought that was a good idea,” said Hermleigh Superintendent Cassie Petty.
Petty said the name change would go into effect during the school’s homecoming festivities this fall.
The board approved hiring Heath Gibson as head football coach, Kakai Wulfjen as junior high school science teacher, Jordan Williamson as high school science teacher and Sam Winters as boys’ basketball coach.
The board also approved application for waivers for school days and CPR instruction missed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Petty reported that the school’s athletes started summer workouts Monday.
“We started strong,” she said. “It’s two-fold. I think they want to be around each other and they’re excited to get to come do something.”
Work on the recent school track replacement is ongoing, she reported.
Concrete and fence repairs are complete, while some areas with excess tar still need to be cleaned up, Petty said.
The board approved using a $25,000 school safety grant to fund the majority of an access control system for the school’s exterior doors. Petty said the total cost of the project, bid through The Interlocal Purchasing System (TIPS), is $26,345.
