The Hermleigh ISD board of trustees approved the purchase of a new bus and a new security system during Tuesday night’s meeting.
The board considered presentations made by Responsive Services International (RSI) representative Chris Allen and Blue Star Bus Sales representative Robert Haynie prior to making a decision.
In regard to the security system, Allen gave the district the option of an outright purchase or monthly payments for a three-year term.
The board approved a three-year hosted payment agreement for new security cameras that will include audio on some cameras.
“What you’re getting is an IP-based security system,” Allen said. “The advantage of this is that you can see the camera views wherever you are as long as you have an internet connection on your device.”
RSI will initially install a 28 TB (terabyte) system that includes motion-based recording with a 45-day history capability, but more storage can be added as needed.
In regard to the new bus, Haynie gave the district the option of leasing a bus, lease purchasing a bus or purchasing a bus outright.
Bus options included a smaller bus that could fit 29 small children or 19 adults, a 35-passenger bus, a 47-passenger bus and a 53-passenger bus.
“If we have a 47-passenger bus with track seating on the back two or four seats, that seems like a win-win to me,” Hermleigh Maintenance Director Alan Culp said. “We can use those seats when the small kids go on a field trip, and we can take them out and pile up stuff in the back when baseball or softball travels for games.”
The board approved the purchase of a 47-passenger gasoline bus with track seating in the back. The district plans to use the bus on a regular route in the fall and as an activity bus in the spring when groups travel more often.
In other action, trustees approved a waiver for low attendance due to health and safety issues for five canceled school days earlier this semester and the school calendar for the 2018-19 school year was also approved. School will start on Aug. 27 and end May 23, 2019.
Other action items listed on the agenda were the employment of personnel for the 2018-19 school year and the purchase of a new suburban and ag truck. Superintendent Brent Dawson said there was nothing at this time that required action for employment of personnel, and no action was taken, regarding the purchase of a new suburban and ag truck.
The board held a one-hour, 23-minute closed session to consider a level three parent grievance and to discuss the grievance with legal counsel, but action was tabled until the next meeting.
Trustees also met in a 15-minute closed session to discuss personnel, but no action was taken.
